Help Us Build A Therapeutic Pool For Children And Adults With Special Needs

St. Vincent’s Special Needs Services is raising money to construct a highly specialized therapeutic pool that would enable us to greatly enhance therapies through aquatic programs.

Benefits of Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic therapy is a well established modality in physical therapy that allows for physical stressors to be distributed evenly over the body to improve balance, range of motion, cognitive function, aerobic capacity, strength, and flexibility. It is among the most popular choice for rehabilitation of children with neuromuscular disorders because of its benefits.

Therapeutic and functional exercises aided by the buoyancy and resistance of the water enable individuals to learn new movement patterns and become more independent in and out of the water.

Aquatic therapy can also complement traditional physical therapy because of the effects on range of movement, as well as overall ability to relax and focus.

State-of-the-Art
The pool we want to build will enable us to provide one-on-one therapy to children or adults. Typically the therapy session will last 20 to 30 minutes. Each session is individualized, based on the therapy plan for that individual.

Our state-of-the-art therapeutic pool will have a subfloor with holes that allows water to seep through from underneath. A push of a button will raise or lower the subfloor to the desired depth of water needed for each individual’s therapy. Hence, if an individual needs to sit down in the water for therapy, the therapist will adjust the floor so that the depth of water is shallow. If the individual therapy requires a standing position, the floor will be lowered to add more water depth, up to six feet. An individual may even be rolled into the water on a wheelchair, rather than using a hoist for lifting, and then glided off of the chair once it is submerged into the water.

Help Us Reach Our Goal
We’re halfway there. Won’t you help us reach our goal so that we can provide this therapy to some very special and deserving people?
