Unraveling How Autism Differs in Boys and Girls

Most people know that more boys than girls are diagnosed with autism. Why is this so? Even when girls have the same genetic mutations, they do not show the same symptoms. Girls are better able to mask the condition because they have better social skills. The areas of their brains that have to do with social behavior are not as affected. Girls are more likely to play pretend and express concern for others. By studying this protective factor in girls, scientists hope to find a protein or biological marker that will allow them to develop a drug or treatment which will benefit all persons with autism.
